Gambhir hits Century, India on Top in Kotla Test
A fine unbeaten century by Gautam Gambhir and classy half centuries by Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman put India on top on the first day of the third test match between India and Australia at Feroz Shah Kotla. India finished the day at 296/3 with Gambhir batting on 149 and Laxman on 54. Gambhir faced 285 balls and hit 20 boundaries and a six. It was Gambhir's 3rd century in test cricket and second against Australia. Gambhir had earlier scored a century in Mohali test.
Earlier, Australia struck early by removing Sehwag and Dravid cheaply, but Gambhir and Sachin stalled Australian onslaught with their 130-run partnership. Tendulkar made 67. For Australia, Johnson took 2 wickets, while Brett Lee claimed one. Gambhir was targeted by Australians throughout the day, but they failed to take his wicket. Gambhir was involved in on-field altercations with Shane Watson and Simon Katich. He hit a six off Watson to complete his century.
